Investigation of Water Composition on Formation Damage and Related Energy Recovery from Geothermal Reservoirs: Geochemical and Geomechanics Insights

The main challenge in extracting geothermal energy is to overcome issues relating reservoirs such as the formation damage and fracturing. objective of this study develop an integrated framework that considers geochemical geomechanics aspects a reservoir characterizes various damages impairment porosity permeability, hydraulic fracturing, lowering breakdown pressure, associated heat recovery. In research study, shallow, deep high temperature with different water compositions were simulated predict severity/challenges during injection hot reservoirs. developed model solves reactions processes take place results obtained then used investigate aspect cold-water injection. Our findings presented temperature, injected concentration sulfate water, its dilution have noticeable impact on rock dissolution precipitation. addition, anhydrite precipitation has controlling effect permeability investigated case study. It was observed could decrease scale while rich intensify Thus, critical level, where production reduces generation no longer remains economical. evident incompatible would porosity. investigation performed determine decrease. found for 50% reduction case, initial pressure reduced from 2588 psi 2586 psi, 75% it decreased 2584 psi. based significant but fracturing insignificant selected We propose composition should be designed minimize pressures shallow avoided.
